Severe thunderstorms, hail, heavy bursts of rain possible for SEQ

South-east Queensland could cop heavy bursts of rain and hail during severe thunderstorms, as parts of the state recorded the highest rainfall totals for the month.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Monday forecast that much of Queensland would see storms across the week.

Meteorologist Helen Kirkup said in the south-east some thunderstorms could become severe, with heavy bursts of rain, damaging winds and hail possible.

“There is also the slight chane that storms in the north-west of the state could also develop severe characteristics,” she said.

“We expect these showers and thunderstorms to continue right through the week, but we might see a brief lull in this rainfall in the south-east on Monday night and Tuesday as there’s a trough moving offshore.

“We have deep tropical moisture drawing across the western central and southern parts of Queensland during the middle of the week, with a rain band crossing central and southern Queensland from Wednesday to Friday.”
